Biography
Samuel Ayer was born on 9 June 1736 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.1,2 He and Mary Carleton had marriage banns published on 25 April 1761 in Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts.3 He and Mary Carleton were married on 7 October 1761 in Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts.4,5 He died on 14 May 1807 at age 70 in Saint Johnsbury, Caledonia, Vermont.6 He was buried at Goss Hollow Cemetery+ in Saint Johnsbury, Caledonia, Vermont.7 Samuel Ayer lived on lot 91 range 7 in Weare, NH. He and his wife, Mary, removed from Haverhill, MA to Weare, NH. The lot was known as Sugar Hill. He bought one-half of the lot south of the road of Ebenezer Collins, paid him 223 old tenor and built his house on the northeast corner. In 1791 he sold to Jonathan Edmunds of Salisbury Point for 270 lawful money. The farm remained in the Edmunds family for three generations. Marriage to Mary, April 1788 maybe error on date unless married (2). Samuel Ayer had a Figure 7 brand on the under side of his cattle's left ear. He served in the Haverhill companies in the campaign of 1757. He went to Cambridge for six weeks in both 1775 and 1776. He was a Private in Capt. Aaron Quimby's Company. (Source: History of Weare, NH by, William Little.) Samuel Ayer was very active during the war. Weare, NH raised a force of 2000 men to form 3rd Regt. under Gen. John Stark, James Rush and Enoch Poor. June 6, 1776 he signed the Association Test which was New Hampshire's Declaration of Independence. "We the subscribers do hereby solemnly engage and promise that we will, to the utmost of our power at the risque of our lives and fortunes, with arms oppose the hostile proceedings of the British fleets and armies against the U.S. Colonies. Samuel Ayer came to St. Johnsbury at an early day, and settled in the northern part, on the farm now owned by his great-grandson, Horace W. Ayer. At the time the place was a dense forest, and they suffered the hardships and privations of a pioneer life. His son Hezekiah came with him and succeeded him on the family farm. They went to Lyndon to mill a distance of about five miles, by the aid of marked trees. Samuel died in 1807 in his seventieth year, and his wife survived him until 1828. Hezekiah died in 1849, aged seventy-nine years, and his wife survived him until 1863, dying at the age of ninety-nine years. He was the father of eight children, and was succeeded on the homestead by his son, George, who married Eliza Humphrey, of Burke, their only child, Horace W. Ayer now residing on the homestead. He married Emma Kendall, of Sheffield, Vt. They had one son, Harley L. Ayer who was born on the homestead May 15, 1870 and is the fifth generation on the place. SAR nr. P-105917. DAR nr. Samuel Ayer had person sources.8,9,10,11 He served in the military with the Haverhill companies in 1755.12 He lived in Weare, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, from 1770 to 1786. He was named an heir in the will of Simon Ayer on 7 September 1773.13 Samuel Ayer served in the military for six weeks in 1775 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.14 He signed the Association Test on 6 June 1776 in Weare, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.15 He served in the military as a private in Capt.
