Sergeant-at-Law in 1357 (31 Edward III), one of the Justices of the King's Bench in 1359 (33 Edward III), Lord Chief Justice in 1365 (39 Edward III), and Lord Chancellor of England in 1375 (49 Edward III). He was one of the Executors of the Will of King Edward III, dated 7 Oct 1376. The Inquisition Post Mortem at the time of John Knyvett's death showed him to have held a vast extent of property in Cambridge, Northampton, and other Counties.
