Biography

John Newcomb was born on 15 May 1752 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut. He and Sarah Randall were married on 30 March 1769 in Cornwallis Township, Kings, Nova Scotia+. He died before May 1778.

"When he was eight years old, John Newcomb removed to Cornwallis, NS, with his parrents. He got into debt by his own or others' contracting and left the country, supposedly for the United States. By some it has been thought that he was the John Newcomb of Eastport, ME. but this was not the case, since John of Eastport (#98) was born in Gloucester, Mass., a descendant of the Newcombs of Cape Cod, Mass. It is more than probable that he was the John Newcomb who served in the War of the Revolution as a private in the Second Regiment, New York Line, 5th Co. -Ten Eyke's Co; enlisted 1 Jan 1777, for the war; missing from his company in July, rejoining 13 Nov 1777. He also have been the John Newcomb of New York, "marriner," who married, 10 Nov 1781, Ann Smith. There is no proof, however, that such is the case." (BMN) Could he have been the John Newcombe who, in 1773, accompanied Thaddeus Lyman from Stonington, CT, to New Orleans and thence to Big Black & Bayou Pierre, MS, in 1775? Reference nr. BMN108.
