Frank Hamilton Newcomb was born on 10 November 1846 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.1 He and Rose Prioleau were married on 12 July 1876 in Wilmington, New Hanover, North Carolina.1 He died on 19 February 1934 at age 87.2 He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Capt. Newcomb served in the US Navy in the Civil War. Transfered to the Revenue Marine (Coast Guard) in 1873 as Lt. As commander of the tug Hudson in the Spanish-American War, he distinguished himself at the battle of Cardenas by towing Wilmington to safety while under fire. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He retired with the rank of Capt. Commandant U.S. Coast Guard. His is the namesake for the WW-II destroyer USS Newcomb (DD-586). Reference nr.
